How One Construction Business Owner Grew to Work Smarter, Not Harder

When you run a small business, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle. But as William, a client in the specialty construction industry, found out, growth doesn't always mean working harder. Sometimes, it means working smarter and having the right strategy in place.

I first connected with William a few months ago. He was a hardworking entrepreneur with a strong reputation in his niche. In fact, I had already sent a few referrals his way. His business was doing well, but he wasn’t sure if he could handle the growing demand. The work was there, but so was the worry: “If I get more jobs, can I handle it?”

The Dilemma of Growth

I remember the conversation clearly. William said, “I’m doing okay, but I need a little more work. The referrals you’ve sent have been great, but I just don’t know if I can handle much more. I’m already working 70 hours a week.”

It was clear to me that William was caught in a dilemma. He wanted to grow his business and increase revenue, but he felt like he was at his breaking point. There was no time for a vacation, no time for his family, and he was starting to feel like he was working in his business, not on it.

I asked him to share some details: What were the numbers looking like? What did his current workload mean in terms of income?

The answer was telling. He was working almost every day of the week, with few breaks. But in terms of income, he wasn’t far from where he needed to be to live comfortably. He was doing well, but he wasn’t thriving.

The Solution: Time vs. Income

So, we took a deeper look at the numbers. Here’s what we discovered:

William was bringing in a solid income, but his time investment was unsustainable. To truly grow, we figured he would need to hire three additional workers. More hands on deck would allow him to handle the influx of new jobs coming in from the marketing services we were providing—website development, ranking services, and Facebook ads.

But what was really exciting was this: by making that move, he could make around $4,900 more in the coming year. The best part? He wouldn’t have to continue working those exhausting 70-hour weeks.

Instead of sacrificing every weekend and holiday, William could reduce his hours to 45-50 hours a week. More importantly, he could take a whole week of vacation, plus 2-3 long weekends each year. This small shift in his business operations would help him reclaim his life, without sacrificing income.

I said to him, “William, if you stick with this, you’ll have not only a better work-life balance but a growing company. You’ll be able to take a step back and focus on the bigger picture.”

The Long-Term Vision

But we weren’t done yet. We started talking about what would happen if William continued with our marketing efforts and invested in his growth consistently.

Looking ahead to the next year, we projected that his company could see an additional 10-15% in revenue. Not only would this provide him with even more financial freedom, but it would also allow him to cut his workweek down to just 30 hours. That’s right—just 30 hours a week!

And the best part? More time to enjoy with his family. William would finally be able to take real vacations and have the quality time he was missing out on while working long hours to make ends meet.

The Big Takeaway

For William, this was a game-changer. He was no longer just a worker trying to scrape by; he was becoming a business owner with a plan for sustainable growth. He could now build a team that would allow him to step back from the day-to-day grind and focus on what really mattered: growing his business and enjoying life.

It’s not just about increasing revenue. It’s about getting the right systems in place, finding the right marketing strategies, and making sure that the work-life balance you want is part of the equation.

William is well on his way to transforming his business into a thriving, sustainable enterprise. And it all started with a shift in perspective—understanding that growth doesn’t mean more work; it means smarter work.

If you’re like William and want to stop feeling like you’re on a never-ending hamster wheel, reach out to us today. Let’s talk about how you can work less, earn more, and grow into the business owner you’ve always wanted to be.
